Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (Winter 2009)

  by Dong Ngo (cnet.com) - Mars 2009

At $179, the new AirPort Extreme is on the pricey side among high-end routers and unfortunately, it offers a relatively skimpy amount of networking features, especially for Windows users. It does, however, have high throughput speeds and the ease of...

Fast throughput; easy to use; true dual-band; guest networking; printer and network storage support; aesthetically pleasing design

Limited networking features; picky support for USB external hard drive; only three Ethernet ports; no Web interface; no remote access for Windows users; supports only 50 clients; only OS X 10.4 or later can access storage feature

The AirPort Extreme Base Station is a great wireless router for Mac or novice users who need something that's simple, nice-looking, and works well for their homes. Savvy Windows users will find many other alternatives that offer a lot more features for...

Hunk of junk

Overheated as much as it is overhyped. Worked two days and quit. ZERO support from Apple -- what a bunch of losers!!

The most expensive non-wireless modem ever

What is WITH this thing? Two Apple computers and neither can find the device

Just works..... GREAT!

Very pleased and when used with airport express, the range is easily extended to meet the most demanding distances.

I use this is a mixed environment and have no problems... in fact, we replaced a dlink and linksys after both being a complete nightmare

None for the average household

Great Range & Pretty!

It's good if you're willing to sacrifice extra ports for sleek design which anyone buying an apple product probably is.

I've had a Netgear and D-link would always have spotty WIFI on top floor with those, with the Airport i get full connection at all times. Plug and play friendly for novice users

Only 3 Ethernet ports, not really a huge deal but almost every other router has at least 4, also connecting external harddrive to the USB can be a pain but once you have it working, it works

I have had numerous routers over the years but this is my first dual band router and what a dream. I have it now for over 12 months and the thing just works, be it for my apple products or my PC. I stream Netflix and vudu to PS3 and LG blu-ray player,...

I have 15 devices connected ranging from Apple products (iPods, AppleTV) to Windows PC/laptop and even PS3 and LG blu-Ray player. All with zero problems or signal drops

The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is the fact that using an external hard drive through the USB port is rather problematic and slow. I had to reformat my WD 1Tb drive to FAT32, but it became extremely slow. I wish it was compatible with NTFS

The Best Router Ever!

I have previously owned NetGear and D-Link routers. My last router before purchasing the Airport Extreme was a D-Link 655. That, too, worked well for several years until a few months when I started having connectivity problems. After switching to the...

Simple set-up ; Great looks ; Flawless operation ; USB Port

None! This router is perfect

Got it with the hope of getting a better signal to my 4g itouch out on the back patio -- but as it turned out, the range was worse than when using a very old Linksys b/g wap or a fairly new Hawking b/g/n [all three access points tried, one at a time,...

Nice styling, easy setup -- even on PC [with provided software]. Dual band nice if you have hardware that can make use of it

Bad range. Very bad range. [Tried two samples of MC340LL/A -- the latest as of today

It is pretty other than that I cannot find a pro after 12 months of usage

Poor signal strength, poor throughput, non mac boxes will have a headache plain and simple, no web interface, poor setup, buggy USB connection, I just dont have a lot of good things to say about this it is junk plain and simple
